An employee at a West Hartford Dunkin’ Donuts has been suspended for what she said was a joke that others didn’t find quite so humorous.

When a WHPD officer went into the business Saturday to grab a cup of joe, the employee said to him, “We don’t serve cops here.” Another individual in line at the same time, offered to buy the officer a cup of coffee, but the officer simply turned around and walked out of the store. The employee, claiming she was only joking, ran out after the officer and apologized to him.

Joke or not, the incident garnered some strong reactions from the locals, the law enforcement community and the franchise. West Hartford Police Chief Tracey G. Gove said they were showed “overwhelming support” following the incident. Gove, along with Asst. Chief Daniel Copping, met with the regional franchise president of Dunkin’ Donuts Monday.

The employee has since been suspended and the franchise has made it a point to show their support for the law enforcement community.
