When a man recently “found human remains” at the bottom of the Colorado River in Cienega Springs, Arizona, local authorities set out to recover what they expected to be bodies, but once they got to the scene, the snorkeling enthusiast because rather embarrassed when it was determined the skeletons he found were fake and likely someone’s idea of a funny joke.
The skeletons, which were given the nickname “The Skeleton Tea Party,” were bound to lawn chairs, sitting next together and submerged in about 40 feet of water. The chairs were held in place by being tied to large rocks. One of the bony guys was wearing sunglasses and the other held a sign which included the words “Bernie,” likely a reference to the movie “Weekend at Bernie’s,” and “dream in the river.” The entire sign could no longer be read, but it did include the date Aug. 16, 2014.
“I don’t think they were trying to set up anything to scare anyone,” said Lt. Curtis Bagby. “I think they were gonna try to be funny.”
Because no crime was committed, there will be no investigation, but Bagby still wants people to know that it’s not okay to leave things in the river.
Meanwhile, Bagby said divers will recover the “remains” and they may place them outside of the sheriff’s office as a joke.
