The Department of Defense is looking to possibly rent space at Trump Tower to essentially be close by when the president returns to his New York City penthouse residence at the top of the tower.
U.S. officials said the space will likely be leased through a third party, not President Trump’s business, the Trump Organization, whose headquarters are also located in the midtown skyscraper.
“The Department of Defense is working through appropriate channels and in accordance with all applicable legal requirements,” said Army Lt. Col. J.B. Brindle, who also added that the space is necessary for support personnel and equipment.
Brindle indicated the space in the high-end property, which runs around $1.5 million per year for an entire floor, would be “limited.”
It’s a customary move for the military to occupy a space near the president’s residence and has done so with past presidents, including Barack Obama.
