Defense attorney punches cop in court (VIDEO)

A Michigan defense attorney is facing several charges after he assaulted a police officer during a heated argument in a Macomb County courtroom last week.

Nijad G. Mehanna, 41, was in court representing his client in a drug case when he began to argue with the detective lieutenant in charge of the case about access to a witness. Words were exchanged, then Mehanna walked up to the officer and began pushing him, moving him back several feet. Then, without warning, the pushing turned to punching. Witnesses said Mehanna would not quit and continued to punch the officer until he was wrestled to the ground by other officers on the scene.

The officer was left with a fat lip, a bloody nose, a bruised face and several loose teeth. Mehanna was arrested and charged with assaulting, resisting and obstructing a police officer. He has since posted a $10,000 bond.

Roseville Police Chief James Berlin said that while there have been screaming matches and pushing matches, he’s never witnessed anything quite this intense in the courtroom. In fact, when Berlin was first told of the incident, he believed it was a joke.
