Daughter of deceased officer receives police escort on the first day of kindergarten (VIDEO)

Five-year-old Charlee Winebrenner, whose father was an Akron police officer who was shot and killed in November while helping to protect customers inside a local bar from an unruly customer armed with a gun, may not have had her father by her side when she started kindergarten Thursday at her New Franklin school, but scores of officers showed up for the little girl’s big day.

Officer Justin Winebrenner, 32, was off duty and unarmed when the shooting occurred, but nonetheless, his fellow officers vowed to be there for Winebrenner’s wife and daughter. They lined the sidewalk and put a smile on Charlee’s face as she walked into the school with her mother and grandparents.

The officers in attendance said it was simply their way of showing the family they are there to support them.
