Dashcam footage of Iowa officer involved gunfight (VIDEO)

Dashcam footage has been released of a shooting that left another officer injured April 1.

Maquoketa Police Sgt. Brendan Zeimet was conducting a check on a truck that was parked on the wrong side of the street around 3 a.m. when Aaron Scott, 30, stepped out of his vehicle and opened fire with an SKS rifle, striking Zeimet once in the forearm, KCRG reports.

Zeimet drew his duty pistol and initiated the gun battle as soon as he saw Scott bringing his rifle to bear. As Zeimet retreated behind his squad car he fired a total of seven times, but Scott unloaded up to 19 rounds.

Scott fled in his truck, which was later found rolled in a ditch. Scott was inside, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators also discovered four guns and a large quantity of ammo inside the vehicle.

Scott had left a suicide note at his house and investigators believe he may have set out seeking a confrontation after a falling out with his girlfriend several hours prior.

Zeimet was cleared from his shooting and Maquoketa Police Chief Brad Koranda extended his condolences to the Scott family.

“I also want to keep in mind the Scott family also had a tragedy that night and we as a department give our sympathies to them also,” he said.
