Country singer Scotty McCreery busted with gun, ammo at North Carolina airport (VIDEO)

Country music artist Scotty McCreery found himself in a bit of hot water earlier this month after a security check of his baggage at a Raleigh-Durham airport turned up a loaded 9mm and two boxes of ammunition.

McCreery, whose musical talent was discovered on the show “American Idol” six years ago, explained that the incident was a simple mistake.

“While in between tour dates last week, I went to go target shooting with a friend a few days before an early flight out of my hometown Raleigh-Durham airport. Unfortunately, I did not realize that I left my pistol in my backpack until the TSA found it during the security X-ray screening and rightly confiscated it,” McCreery noted in a statement to ABC.

McCreery, who was robbed at gunpoint in 2014, also said he’s been a concealed carry permit holder “for awhile now” and takes gun safety “very seriously.”

McCreery was issued a citation and released and has a pending court date.
