A father of four from Bakersfield, California, died Wednesday shortly after a group of police officers allegedly beat him with batons as he lay defenseless on the sidewalk.
David Sal Silva, 33, allegedly became hostile when police approached him to ask if he was the intoxicated man who neighbors had called to complain about. Officers quickly called for backup and witnesses said Silva was soon being beat in the face and body by as many as nine policemen and their batons.
Witnesses who had recorded the event with their cell phones and cameras had the devices confiscated by cops, who claimed the footage could yield evidence.
Witness Ruben Ceballos described the event: “When I got outside I saw two officers beating a man with batons, and they were hitting his head so every time they would swing, I could hear the blows to his head.”
Police have refused to comment, but Silva’s brother, Christopher claimed, “My brother spent the last eight minutes of his life pleading, begging for his life.”
The family has hired attorney David Cohn, who told reporters they plan to file a civil rights lawsuit in federal district court next week.
