A Tennessee man was sentenced to 120 months in prison Wednesday for possessing a firearm while being a felon, according to the Justice Department.
Jamie Thomas, 29, got into an altercation with Memphis police on Sep. 10, 2014, when officers conducted a traffic stop on his vehicle.
As officers walked up to the car, Thomas reportedly put something inside his mouth and refused to turn off his vehicle when asked. After an officer reached inside through the passenger window and turned off the vehicle, Thomas started it back up and accelerated, with he and the officer fighting for control.
Thomas then jumped from the vehicle and ran, leaving the officer in the passenger seat to try and stop the moving vehicle. The defendant tossed a Smith and Wesson .40 caliber pistol as he ran from the scene.
While still trying to escape, Thomas flagged down a vehicle, which unbeknownst to the defendant, was being driven by an undercover detective. Thomas offered the detective $200 to drive him away from the scene, and the detective agreed.
After a short time driving, the detective then tried unsuccessfully to arrest Thomas, who escaped again. Thomas was then finally arrested at his residence later the same day.
A number of different law enforcement agencies worked together on the investigation, including the U.S. Attorney’s Office; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Memphis Police Department; and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
