Conan O’Brien, Gretchen Carlson stump for ‘assault weapon’ ban (VIDEOS)

A late night talk show host and a Fox News commentator this week both called for renewal of a nationwide ban on guns characterized as “assault weapons.”

O’Brien, from his position on his TBS late night vehicle, addressed the audience Monday about the terror attack in Orlando that left 49 dead and dozens injured, pausing from the normal jocularity of the show to advocate a prohibition on the class of firearms.

“These are weapons of war, and they have no place in civilian life,” he said in the above video. “I have tried to understand this issue from every side, and it all comes down to this: nobody I know, or have ever met in my entire life, should have access to a weapon that can kill so many people so quickly.”

Carlson for her part voiced her mind during a Fox broadcast Tuesday, shown below.

Citing a recent poll that held a thin majority of respondents supported a ban on guns with military-style features, the former Miss America cast her lot for gun control.

“Do we need AR-15s to hunt and kill deer? Do we need them to protect our families?” Carlson asked. “I’m in favor of people being able to carry. I think some of these mass shooting would have been less deadly if that were the case. But I’m also with the majority today taking a stand. Can’t we hold true the sanctity of the Second Amendment while still having common sense?”
