Community concerned after teens post gun-wielding video on Instagram (VIDEO)

WMC Action News 5 - Memphis, Tennessee

A video posted to Instagram has some people around Jackson, Mississippi, upset with how the video portrays the city’s youth. The 30-second video shows a group of teens in a car, waving around multiple handguns. But while the community is concerned, authorities say the teens aren’t necessarily doing anything illegal.

“We are looking at some of the individuals involved,” said Jackson Police Chief Lee Vance. “We may be able to determine that they may be convicted felons and we may be able to bring cases against them, but based on the surface it may or may not be illegal.”

Vance added that while it appears the boys are teenagers, there’s no way to know their ages by the video, and that it’s not illegal to possess a handgun if you’re over the age of 18.

John Knight, Executive Director of Jackson Cares, Inc. lost a friend to Russian roulette 20 years ago.

“Nothing is good and cool about that,” Knight said.

Santore Bracey, who is running for Hinds County Tax Collector said the community has to lead by example.

“You don’t have to get out and rob, steal and kill,” Bracey said. “Get out and work hard for what you want.”
