“I don’t do well reigned in” said St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Captain Clay Higgins in a press conference Monday after a brew up within the agency.

Higgins addressed the media on the steps of the Parish Courthouse Monday afternoon and, while advising he loved and respected his sheriff, he could not remain with the department under new guidance handed down.

Known not just in the Louisiana but nationwide for his Crime Stopper videos that went viral, civil rights groups to include the ACLU threw a fit over one that aired two weeks ago in which Higgins called out a local street gang and made what some argued were threats to shortcut due process.

“Darren Carter, do you think men like these are afraid of an uneducated, 125-pound punk like you– that’s never won a fair fight in your life and holds your gun sideways?” said Higgins in the now-controversial video, “Young man, I’ll meet you on solid ground anytime, anywhere–light or heavy– makes no difference to me. You won’t walk away.”

In a statement issued by St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz after the resignation of Capt. Higgins, the Sheriff distanced himself from his outgoing former spokesman.

“I repeatedly told him to stop saying things like, ‘You have no brain cells,’ or making comments that were totally disrespectful and demeaning,” Guidroz said.

“As Sheriff, it is my duty and responsibility that the message going out to the public be professional, on point and truthful,” said Guidroz. “ The public needs to remember the department public information officer is a spokesperson for the sheriff and represents the sheriff’s words, thoughts and message. If Clay Higgins cannot agree with my words, thoughts and message, then he is correct in resigning his position.”

As for Higgins, who remains a constable and is entertaining other law enforcement offers, he closed his press conference with, “I’m gonna go get a cold beer.”
