Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer announced this week that the city will purchase the Pulse nightclub and turn it into a memorial.
Dyer says the city will pay $2.25 million for the club, and will wait 12-18 months before doing anything to it. He says the city plans to wait because the club has become a gathering place for mourners, with flowers, stuffed animals and thousands of items adorning its exterior.
“It has great significance not just for the LGBTQ community and for the Hispanic community, but for all of us that live and love Orlando,” Dyer said in a video statement. “I think it is very important that city take control of the site.”
“We are ecstatic that the city of Orlando bought the property,” said Terry DeCarlo, the director of the GLBT Center of Central Florida in a statement, as reported by the New York Times. “We are sure it will turn out to be something not only Orlando, but the world will be proud of and want to come visit and pay their respects.”
The city will ask the community for input on plans for the memorial.
Last week, a judge ordered the city to make 911 calls from the shooting public.
The June 12 massacre left 49 people dead and 68 people injured.
