A major U.S. railroad company says it has installed new security measures at a Chicago rail yard where around 150 guns have been stolen in recent years.
The Associated Press reported Norfolk Southern announced its beefed up security in a letter sent to U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin.
The letter came as a response to Durbin’s request earlier this year that the company do something to prevent future heists, as three separate incidents had occurred from 2014 to 2016.
In the letter, Norfolk Southern said it is now using more secure train cargo locks and requiring shippers to notify the company if firearms are being stored and shipped on its trains.
The letter did not specify infrastructure changes, such as better fencing, sections of which have been in disrepair and have allowed easy access to thieves.
Durbin said in an email that he was optimistic the changes will help the rail yard’s security.
“These are common sense policy changes that, if implemented properly, should prevent widespread theft in the future,” he said.
