Surveillance video has been released of the Knox County sheriff’s deputy that negligently discharged his firearm injuring three deputies Friday night in Knox County, Tennessee.
Deputy James Blankenship resigned after negligently firing his duty pistol in the sally port of the Detention Facility last Friday.
While at the detention facility, 39-year-old Deputy James Blankenship negligently fired the weapon into the pavement while removing his sidearm. The bullet fragmented and shrapnel struck Deputies Marty Cruze, Patrick York, and Kevin Potter, WBIR reports.
Deputy Cruze was transported to the UT Medical Center and was released after being treated for a minor leg wound. York and Potter were treated on-site for minor injuries. Blankenship was also transported to the UT Medical Center and was released after being treated for chest pain.
While the Office of Professional Standards and the Major Crimes Unit are still investigating the shooting, the initial reports show Blankenship was at fault.
According to the KCSO website, this isn’t the first time Blankenship has unsafely handled a firearm at the detention facility. In 2005, he was written up for “leaving his weapon, two magazines, a knife and a cell phone in an unsecured gun locker at the detention facility.”
Blankenship resigned from his position Monday, claiming personal reasons in his letter to the sheriff.
