Miguel Caballero is the self-styled Giorgio Armani of body armor. He launched his business in 1992 in his native Columbia, at first selling protective jackets to police officers and politicians fighting in Colombia’s dirty war, but since then, he has expanded his line to include a full line of garments.
He also does custom orders for people such as the late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chávez, King Felipe VI of Spain, President Obama and Steven Seagal, who ordered a bulletproof kimono.
He’s one of the few tailors in the world who makes a habit of shooting his customers to prove his products functionality. He’s shot dozens of journalists, customers and even celebrities. He says that there is a ‘survivor’s club‘ of 20 customers who owe their lives to wearing his garments.
“My greatest satisfaction is not earning business, it’s saving lives,” he says.
Business is booming. Caballero has opened shops in South America and Europe and now wants a bigger presence in the United States. This would explain his first time with a booth at this year’s SHOT Show in Las Vegas. His clothing drew a great deal of interest from dealers.
Currently, Caballero is working on a new project to outfit the Mexican military. His clothing can be ordered from his website or from Amazon.
