Boston Marathon bomber sentenced to death (VIDEO)

The man responsible for the 2013 bombing that killed three people and injured more than 260 other during the Boston Marathon was sentenced to death by lethal injection Friday.

A jury reached a unanimous verdict, according to court documents, sealing Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s fate after 14 hours of deliberations, the Associated Press reported.

Seventeen of the 30 counts Tsarnaev was convicted of last month carried the possibility of the death penalty.

Just two of the jurors found Tsarnaev had shown any remorse for the bombing, which killed an 8-year-old boy, a 23-year-old Boston University graduate student from China and a 29-year-old Boston naitive, CNN reported. Tsarnaev and his brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, also reportedly killed a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer a few days later, though it’s unknown which of the two actually pulled the trigger.

The defense reportedly attempted to paint a picture of conspiracy, saying the 26-year-old Tamerlan corrupted his younger 19-year-old brother, Tsarnaev.

One aggregating factor supporting the prosecution’s case for the death penalty was how Tsarnaev and his brother targeted an iconic event like the Boston Marathon – which draws large crowds, making it susceptible to terrorism.

One of 12 factors the prosecution was unable to prove was that Tsarnaev encouraged others to carry out acts of violence against the United States, the AP reported.

U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch called the jury’s decision “a fitting punishment” for Tsarnaev, who “coldly and callously perpetrated a terrorist attack that injured hundreds of Americans and ultimately took the lives of three individuals.

Those killed were Krystle Marie Campbell, 29, Lingzi Lu, 23, and Martin Richard, 8, who was watching the marathon with his family just a few feet from where the second bomb detonated.  Several days after the attacks, the brothers murdered 27-year-old MIT patrol officer Sean Collier.

The older of the two brothers was killed during a shootout with police a few days after the bombing.
