The U.S. Customs and Border Protection wants to remind those traveling to and from Mexico who opt for more natural means of pain relief that peyote – like heroin, LSD and ecstasy – is still classified as a Schedule I controlled substance and therefore illegal.
“It is important that our travelers are aware of what they can bring into the United States from other countries to avoid potential delays,” said Port Director Efrain Solis Jr., Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry.
The Field Operations Office at the Hidalgo International Bridge in Hidalgo, Texas has recently seen numerous travelers trying to bring peyote-based pain relief gels across the border. In addition to being made from peyote, the pain relieving substances routinely contain marijuana as well, which is also a Schedule 1 controlled substance.
“The products CBP prevent from entering the United States are those that would injure community health, public safety, American workers, children, or domestic plant and animal life, or those that would defeat our national interests,” the CBP noted in a press release. “Sometimes the products that cause injury, or have the potential to do so, may seem fairly innocent.”
