After being robbed at gunpoint last week, a University of Houston grad student is asking for police patrols to increase in the area.
Jerry Ford, Jr., a vocal leader of the local Black Lives Matter movement, was headed into his off-campus apartment when he was approached by a man who he thought was a fellow student.
Ford said the guy was just sort of hanging out in front of the building, then asked Ford if he had a key to get inside. Ford informed the man he lived there and was headed upstairs, but before he knew it, Ford had a gun in his face. The suspect took Ford’s wallet and cell phone, then ran off.
But the incident wasn’t a one-time occurrence either. Another student was robbed about two weeks prior and dozens of vehicles have been broken into over the last few months.
“It’s a little daunting. I’m not from Houston and I just moved here for school and everything,” said Aaron Maxwell, who just transferred to the university. “And it seems to be…it’s not just here at this property, it’s the area,”
Likewise, Ford said the crime is becoming a pattern in the area and he hopes to see an increase in police presence.
