Federal regulators gave thumbs up to a new adjustable stabilizing brace for an AR-type pistol created by SB Tactical, the company credited with originating the device.
The ruling by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives states the device — the Pistol Stabilizing Brace —is approved for a number of AR pistol designs, the company said in a statement issued Thursday.
Following ATF issuing the favorable opinion, SB Tactical said it accelerated the development of two adjustable brace models — the MPX PSB and SBPDW — that will ship to stores this summer.
The SBPDW weighs in at 18.14 ounces, measures 5.5 inches in length, and has a max width of 2.25 inches. The MPX PSB is designed exclusively for the Sig Sauer MPX and Sig MCX line of products. The MPX PSB weighs 19.13 ounces, is 8 inches in length and has a max width of 2.25 inches.
The Florida-based company is credited with introducing the device that some view as pushing regulatory boundaries. Although the ATF ruled the brace perfectly legal if used as intended, but if shouldered the firearm could then fit the definition of short-barreled rifle.
SB tactical reminded the public that installation of the brace would not change the classification of a pistol in accordance with Gun Control Act provisions.
SB Tactical’s vice president of business development, Jeff Creamer, said the company is excited about the approval and pushing the product to market.
