Armed protesters turn out to support Sam Houston statue

Hundreds gathered in a Houston park over the weekend to show their opposition to the rumored removal of a Sam Houston statue.

“Erasing history for the sake of political correctness or to make somebody feel better, it’s not just stupid — it’s dangerous,” said protest organizer David Amad.

The statue has stood in Hermann Park since 1925 and, at this point, there’s no known set plans to have the monument removed. However, rumors that the group Texas Antifa and others were pushing to have the monument removed because Houston owned slaves, prompted the protest, which included a number of participants carrying guns and Confederate flags.

Sam Houston was the Republic of Texas’ first president and while he did own slaves, Houston refused to pledge an oath of allegiance to the Confederacy.
