After an uptick in inmate suicides, officials with the Pulaski County Jail are moving forward with a $1 million project to deter future deaths in the form of a fence.

Currently, inmates – or anyone else – can easily fall over 20 feet from the second floor of the facility, but officials are confident the fencing, which will be made from a special tamper-proof material, will prevents future incidents with inmates and deputies alike.

According to Administrative Lieutenant Rodney Shepard, two inmates have committed suicide while in custody and another two attempted suicide so far this year.

Construction on the fencing project will begin over the next two years.
