When John Sims purchased his Tucson home, the real estate listing made no mention of a Cold War-era fallout shelter, but last month that’s exactly what he discovered was hidden beneath his backyard.
Sims learned that city records had a rough drawing of the shelter, which was believed to have been constructed by a company named Whitaker Pools in 1961. Sims said he used a metal detector to find the exact location of the shelter, which he plans to restore to its “original glory.”
