In an effort to save a friend, Archie Andrews gets caught in the crossfire (of a gun, knife or some penetrating object).
Archie Comics announced Tuesday in the epic finale to the series “Life With Archie” that Archie will make the ultimate sacrifice to save a friend.
“We’ve been building up to this moment since we launched ‘Life with Archie’ five years ago and knew that any book that was telling the story of Archie’s life as an adult had to also show his final moment,” Archie Comics publisher and co-CEO Jon Goldwater told the Associated Press.
The series chronicles Archie’s grown up life, so after high school and college, and dealing with grown up problems like shaving, paying bills, watching TV, etc.
“‘Life With Archie’ shows what happens when Archie becomes an adult and starts dealing with grownup issues,” Goldwater said in an interview with CNN.
But why kill Archie?
“It’s the natural conclusion to the ‘Life With Archie’ series,” Goldwater added. “Archie dies as he lived — heroically. He dies saving the life of a friend, and does it in his usual selfless way. Archie has always been a representation of us — the best of us. Our strengths and our faults.”
The double issue — #36 and #37 — will first detail the death of Archie and then jump ahead a year to show what life is like for Jughead, Betty, Veronica and Reggie without him.
The iconic character first appeared in comics in 1941, and although he dies in this series, he’ll still be alive and well in others.
The issue hits stands July 23.
