Newark, NY -(AmmoLand.com)- The National Deer Alliance (NDA) recently presented Outdoor Life’s Editor-in-Chief, Andrew McKean with the organization’s Communicator of the Year award.

McKean’s contributions to the introduction of the new deer organization were vital in propelling the NDA to where it is today.

“Deer are at the heart and soul of the North American hunter. Considering all the intensity and affection we devote to them, it makes sense that we deer hunters get behind a national advocacy organization that’s pulling for the animals that provide so much entertainment, meaning, and meat,” stated McKean.

McKean not only covered the NDA in-depth via a wide range of press outlets but was instrumental in expressing the need for an organization such as the National Deer Alliance from the very beginning. Establishing an association that would provide a unified voice for the conservation of our nation’s deer population was a move that in many ways, was led by McKean himself.

NDA Executive Director Craig Dougherty presented the award saying, “Outdoor Communicators have been a big part of the NDA’s initial success and no one has done more than Andrew McKean from Outdoor Life. A year ago at the first ever deer summit he stood up and called for the formation of an organization to unite the entire deer hunting community under one umbrella. A year later we have such an organization. Andrew was the obvious choice for the first NDA Communicator of the Year award. Not only has he inspired the NDA and helped get the word out, but has been digging into and writing about deer issues for years. He is not afraid to use the Outdoor Life megaphone to sound the alert. He is a true journalist in every sense of the word.”

McKean was presented with the award during the 2015 North American Deer Summit in Louisville, Kentucky which included 2 days of expert speakers, interactive sessions and panel discussions that identified strategies that will address the issues most impacting deer and deer hunting in North America.

According to Dougherty, “We now have our marching orders and are starting our work. Involving as many stakeholders as possible insures no one group of deer enthusiasts will dominate the organization’s advocacy agenda. It is heartening to see biologists and other professional deer managers sitting down with hunters and industry representatives sitting down at the same table working deer issues. That’s the way good policy is made.”

Membership in the NDA is free and includes a comprehensive weekly e-newsletter on all things deer including: deer behavior, biology, hunting techniques and breakthroughs as well as issues impacting deer and deer hunting in North America.
