9 steps to surviving any kidnapping

Although it’s rare, adult kidnapping occurs. Here are a few suggestions to consider in order to help you survive. It’s important to note, however, that every situation and every person is different, therefore, the following list is recommended based only upon situation, terrain and tactics.

1.  Carry a concealed gun

Carrying a concealed firearm is a great option for surprising would-be kidnappers. Surprise is your friend, and a great tactic. Kidnappers will use surprise against you, so be prepared to surprise them back.

2.  Keep a round in the chamber

Most lethal confrontations—especially a hands-on kidnapping—will be within bad breath distance. In other words, that’s close. You simply do not have time to charge your handgun. Keep it loaded. If you have a pistol, keep a round in the chamber. Be comfortable with a loaded firearm because an unloaded gun doesn’t do anyone much good, especially when time and speed are essential to winning gun fights.

3.  Be prepared mentally and tactically

There are a myriad of ways to train and prepare. You and I must consider “what-if” scenarios. We need to have confidence, plan for predetermined tactics and respond rapidly in a defensive situation. That’s what I call tactical CPR, an acronym I coined. Our counterattack must be better than the kidnapper’s or hostage taker’s attack. We need to prepare mentally and physically through envisioning rehearsals and mastering proper tactics and muscle memory through repetitive gun handling and firearms shooting tactics.

4.  Be violent

There are some people who cannot be violent and there are some people who are prone towards violence. Under the right circumstance, it’s not only justifiable to be violent, but being aggressive and violent will save your life.

5.  Fight as soon as the attack occurs

The best way to survive an attack is stay away from people and places that are dangerous. Develop habits of safety consciousness by avoiding potential danger areas or lifestyles that may lead to threatening situations. The second most important thing to do if you’ve already done that is to fight as hard as you can as soon as the attack occurs, or as soon as you noticing an attack is imminent.

6.  Be leery of some “tactical advice”

There are several “experts” out there, some even consider themselves as training instructors, but that doesn’t mean they know what they’re talking about. In short, there’s some advice that you should simply never follow.

7. Prepare for the unusual

Be prepared for what can or might happen, not necessarily what is probable. In short, prepare for possibilities and not probabilities. When it comes to tactics and training, focusing upon and preparing for the two percent of the strange situations that can happen will help you win and survive.

8. Try to connect with the kidnapper

Everyone but the truly psychopathic murderers have to dehumanize victims. If you’re taken as a victim, make yourself as sympathetic and human as possible to your attackers. Don’t make up lies. Just be yourself and try to survive, as horrible as the situation may be.

9. Look for a chance to escape or attack

If you’re taken, don’t ever give up. Keep refining your plan of escape, and continue to consider and plan to attack with great viciousness. Just because you’re the underdog for a time doesn’t mean you can’t come off conqueror at last. Never give up hope.

Until next time, continue to hone your skills and keep adding to your tactical toolbox.
