7-Eleven clerk disarms masked robber, chases him off (VIDEO)

Two 7-Eleven clerks in San Leandro, California, attacked and disarmed a masked robber Friday night.

The clerk, Mark, was working at 7-Eleven when an armed robber donning a ski mask barged in, brandished a gun and demanded money. But the robber was careless and when Mark saw an opportunity to attack, he seized it, KTVU reports.

“I saw the guy coming around the corner and I thought he was going to use the sink,” Mark said. “When he passed the sink, I turned and saw the gun. He demanded cash and I held up my hands. He started swinging the gun back and forth. When the gun got close to him, I saw my opportunity. I grabbed it by both ends and just yanked it out of his hand.”

The suspect, relieved of his weapon, fled the store on foot and managed to evade police. While San Leandro Police Lt. Robert McManus doesn’t recommend combatting an armed robber, he recognized the two men for their bravery and swift actions.

“We are extremely lucky no one was injured,” McManus said. “Although we do not advocate that anyone approach someone with a weapon such as a knife or firearm, the quick actions of both employees disarmed the suspect and took a gun off the street that could have been used in another robbery or shooting. Their actions were very brave.”

In retrospect, Mark realizes his actions may have been a little reckless, but in the end he not only helped to thwart a robbery, but also took a gun off the street.

“If you look back, some people say hero, some people say brave, other say stupid,” Mark said. “It’s a little bit of both – of all three, actually. I don’t know if it was the right thing, but it got a gun off the street.”
