More than 100 people were injured and six killed during clashes between teachers and local authorities in Oaxaca, Mexico, over the weekend.
Demonstrators were protesting the country’s education reform that includes mandatory testing, as well as the recent arrest of union leaders. The violence erupted as police worked to disperse the crowd.
Stones and Molotov cocktails were thrown, setting fire to nearby vehicles, before the riot police opened fire on protesters, according to journalists on the scene. However, Oaxaca state Gov. Gabino Cue and Federal Police chief Enrique Galindo said shots were being fired by radicals who were not affiliated with the teachers union, and much of the violence was being perpetuated by that group.
“These kinds of radicalized protests generate violence,” Gabino said.
Altogether, 53 civilians, 41 federal police agents and 14 state police agents were injured.
