Members of the Naval Special Warfare community were well-represented at the polls on Tuesday, with one elected governor of Missouri while two others are headed to Washington.
In the Show Me State, Republican Eric Greitens, a frogman turned author and motivational speaker, beat Democrat Attorney General Chris Koster out for a four-year lease on the Governor’s mansion.
Greitens is a Lt. Cmdr in the Navy Reserve and in 2002 finished Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training before going on to deploy several times to Afghanistan, Iraq and other points hadji.
Despite an endorsement from the National Rifle Association for Koster, Greitens, who zipped off some rounds from a Mini-Gun in a campaign ad, was able to pull out the win.
Another SEAL officer, Montana U.S. Rep. Ryan Zinke, handed Democrat challenger Denise Juneau her hat by picking up 57 percent of the vote for another term representing the Big Sky State in Washington– though he hasn’t shied away from gun rights issues in the state as well.
In his military career, Zinke spent much of his 23 years in the SEAL community and retired as the dean of the Naval Special Warfare graduate school.
Finally, one of the new faces on Capitol Hill in January will be Republican Congressman Scott Taylor, a 37 year old from the Virginia Beach area who won his first term for the state’s 2nd District in the U.S. House by a 24-point margin on Tuesday. Taylor spent eight years in the Navy as an enlisted man and served as a SEAL sniper, going on to found the nonprofit Special Operations OPSEC Education Fund since he left the military.
