GENESEO, IL (Ammoland.com) – Springfield Armory’s latest XD Mod.2 four-inch service model pistol is shipping and will be available at retailers on September 15, 2015.
The brand-new XD Mod.2 4” Service Model 9mm is the company’s latest XD product announcement following last fall’s successful introduction of the XD Mod.2 3” Sub-Compact model.
“We’re thrilled to introduce the new XD Mod.2 Service Model pistol,” Springfield Armory Marketing Director, Chad Dyer said, “It has 30 percent improved GripZone surface comfort and improved Point & Shoot Ergonomics, reinforcing Springfield Armory’s leadership position to continue to evolve and deliver the best polymer-striker-fired pistol products year after year.”
Since its launch 13 years ago, the original XD pistol has been a staple for firearm enthusiasts and law-enforcement agencies alike, according to Springfield Armory CEO Dennis Reese.
“It was, at the time, one of the most innovative and sought-after polymer pistols on the market,” he said. “The XD Mod.2 4” fulfills the need for a service-model pistol built to professional standards and backed by our limited lifetime warranty and reputation.”

In addition to the 4” hammer-forged steel barrel, the new XD Mod.2 pistol features a 16-round magazine capacity; a Melonite-coated steel slide and barrel; a thinner, more sculpted grip frame, resulting in an unmatched ergonomic touch; and an extended sight radius, with fiber-optic front sight and improved slide-gripping serrations for ease of racking the slide.
Both the black and bi-tone models are standard with a four-inch barrel, which contributes to an overall length of 7.3 inches and an unloaded weight of 28 ounces. It comes standard with nearly an extra half-inch sight radius and has been enhanced with a standard front red fiber-optic sight. On top of this, the striker-fired action of the XD® Mod.2 4” allows the shooter to accurately place shots round after round.
It incorporates all the standard XD safety features upon which shooters have come to rely:
- Striker-status indicator and loaded-chamber indicator allow the shooter to visually or physically tell if the pistol is loaded and ready to fire
- Palm-grip safety ensures there is a solid grip engaged with the frame before the pistol itself can function
- Simple takedown lever, easy-to-reach slide stop and magazine release
