Proposed Inclusion Criteria for Progressive Personality Disorder
- • Add to the Cluster B Personality Disorders in the next revision of the DSM
Proposed Criteria
• A pervasive pattern of excessive idealism and entitlement beginning in childhood to middle adolescence and present in a variety of contexts as indicated by five (or more) of the following:
1. Responds to difficulty (i.e., tragic news reports, personal problems, etc) with a desire for more laws, regulations, and/or government involvement (i.e., “There ought to be a law that requires, prevents, etc.…”, “In [insert socialist country], they don’t have the same problems as the U.S.”, etc).
§ Note: If this criteria is met, only a total of three criteria are required to meet the criteria for a progressive personality disorder diagnosis.
2. When discussing politics with others, the individual consistently references socialist countries to bolster his/her point of view.
3. Complete lack of insight into how his/her progressive ideology has contributes to the problems he/she is complaining about (i.e., complaining about high taxes, leaving their state due high taxes then voting for politicians who advocate higher taxes, etc).
§ Note: If this crlaw-abidinget, only a total of three criteria are required to meet the criteria for a progressive personality disorder diagnosis.
4. Externalizes blame for problems and failure to take responsibility for one’s actions.
5. Projects anger on Christians, the American Flag, veterans, and/or other law abiding citizens.
§ Note: If this criteria is met, only a total of three criteria are required to meet the criteria for a progressive personality disorder diagnosis.
6. Targets inanimate objects (statues, flags, guns, etc) as the cause for most problems in the world.
7. Habitually will choose “perceived” safety over freedom.
§ Note: If this criteria is met, only a total of three criteria are required to meet the criteria for a progressive personality disorder diagnosis.
8. A fundamental belief that more government and laws are the solution to most of the problems in the world.
§ Note: If this criteria is met, only a total of three criteria are required to meet the criteria for a progressive personality disorder diagnosis.
9. Limited tolerance for disagreement.
10. Frequently accuses others of being intolerant, particularly those who do disagree with their progressive ideas.
11. Frequently references Hollywood actors and other “famous” individuals when making major life decisions (i.e., voting, what gender they are that particular day, etc).
12. Spends an inordinate amount of time protesting (in person protests, blogging, social media, etc) rather than working and contributing improving the world
13. Advocates for the perceived “disenfranchised” (illegal immigrants, criminals, etc) over law abiding and productive U.S. citizens.
§ Note: If this criteria is met, only a total of three criteria are required to meet the criteria for a progressive personality disorder diagnosis.
14. Chooses political correctness over common sense.
15. Sense of entitlement.
16. Makes frequent contradictory statements about freedom within the same sentence (i.e., I believe in free speech but…., I support people owning guns but…., etc).
• Subtypes:
1. With aggressive features
§ One or more of the following present at any time during the course of the illness:
• Commits acts of physical violence (vandalism, assault, sabotage, etc) against individuals or organizations that have differing beliefs.
• Commits acts of social aggression (threats, rumor spreading, making false accusations, etc) against individuals or organizations that have differing beliefs.
2. Without aggressive features
§ None of the above acts of physical violence or social aggression are present.
Proposed Associated Features Supporting Diagnosis
- • Transient psychotic features (delusions, disordered thinking/behavior) may occur around political elections, when his/her candidate did not win a particular election, or when he/she perceives that progressive ideas have been thwarted.
- • Transient gender identity issues may be present.
- • Believes the mainstream media is unbiased
- • Finds books like 1984 amusing and entertaining
- • Disrespects the Flag of the United States
- • Disrespects U.S. Veterans
Estimated Prevalence
- • Unknown but incidence is increasing at an alarming rate, particularly in colleges and universities. Rates may be as high as 99 percent in liberal arts institutions.
Development and Course
- • There is a consistent presentation in the development and course of progressive personality disorder. The onset is typically insidious, particularly in the pre-teen years. Onset may be acute, particularly midway through one’s first semester at college. Pathology may be considered chronic and lifelong.
Differential Diagnosis
- • Other personality disorders
- o Progressive personality disorder may have a high comorbidity with histrionic and narcissistic personality disorders for subtypes without aggressive features. High comorbidity may exist with antisocial personality disorder and borderline personality disorder for subtypes with aggressive features.
- o Possible high comorbidity with dependent personality disorder for those who defer to others for most decisions.
- • Other psychotic disorders
- o If the psychotic features develop within the context of the stressor (i.e., election loss), a separate psychotic disorder diagnosis should not be given. If the symptoms continue for a time period of greater than one month after the stressor, a separate psychotic disorder diagnosis may be considered
- • Intellectual Disability (formerly called Mental Retardation)
- • Borderline Intellectual Functioning
Risk and Prognostic Factors
- • Permissive parenting
- • Having progressive parents
- • Attending higher education settings
- • Being a Millennial
- • Early and frequent exposure to the mainstream media
- • Frequently watching progressive TV talk shows
- • Prognosis is guarded (at best)
