Perfect Pair Lead 20th Annual Sporting Clays National Championship
San Antonio, Texas – The 20th annual Sporting Clays National Championship got underway at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio today, with a record number of shooters competing on four fields in the main event. At the end of the day's 75-target first round, two shooters led the field of over 1400 shooters with perfect scores.
Bill McGuire of Charleston, Tennessee, and Scott Robertson of Dallas, Texas broke every bird in their first round. In the Ladies concurrent competition, defending Ladies champion Diane Sorantino of Cape May, New Jersey, led with 69 broken targets. In the Junior division, for shooters over 16 and under 21 years of age, Chris McClelland of Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, led with a score of 70, and in the 16-and-under Sub-Junior division, David Radulovich of Columbia Station, Ohio, and Ben Waier of Milton, Wisconsin, tied at 66.
“We're excited to celebrate our 20th event with a record number of shooters from almost every state and several foreign countries,” said Michael Hampton, Jr., Director of Sporting Clays, “The world's top sporting clays shooters are here, and it shows in the excellent scores. Despite four very challenging courses, we're expecting shooters to perform well this week.”
Sporting clays, often described as “golf with a shotgun,” is one of the fastest-growing shooting sports in America. Its official governing body is the National Sporting Clays Association, headquartered at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, which sanctions the National Championship.
“One of the reasons sporting clays is so popular is that shooters of all ability levels can enjoy it and score well in their class. We have several classes that rank shooters by their experience, so even novices can have a great time and perform well in competition,” said Hampton. “In fact, we encourage shooters of all levels to participate in the National Championship. Where else can you shoot with and learn from the best shotgunners in the world?”
The Sporting Clays National Championship continues through Sunday, with each shooter taking on a different course each of the four days. The entire competition is being webcast by the Trigger Sports Network on the NSCA's website. To watch the live competition, including interviews with top shooters, go to www.mynsca.com.
