The Brad Rowse Leadership Award is not awarded annually. The award is only bestowed upon an individual who has demonstrated excellence in leadership in promoting the mission of the National Assembly of Sportsmen's Caucuses and promoting the sportsmen's agenda in the halls of state government.
Sen. Astle has been a driving force behind the Maryland Sportsmen's Caucus' numerous legislative victories and has also been a strong advocate for the establishment, growth and success of the National Assembly of Sportsmen's Caucuses (NASC). He has been an active participant of every meeting that has taken place before and since the inception of NASC, rising to the status of the President of its Executive Council. As a member of NASC, he has also traveled around the country, meeting with state legislators interested in starting a sportsmen's caucus or to attend national policy meetings.
“The NASC has experienced tremendous growth under the tenure of Senator Astle's leadership of the Executive Council,” commented CSF president, Jeff Crane. “Couple this with the success of the Maryland Sportsmen's Caucus and it was a personal honor for me to present this distinguished award to my friend, John Astle.”
Since the inception of the Maryland Legislative Sportsmen's Caucus in 2001, Senator Astle has worked diligently with his colleagues in the caucus and with the Maryland Legislative Sportsmen's Foundation. Highlights of their achievements include: securing Sunday hunting opportunities for the first time in 280 years, opening up 58,000 acres of Chesapeake lands for public and private hunting, securing funding for Maryland's Farmers & Hunters Feeding the Hungry program through sportsmen's license fees, securing funding for the Maryland Artificial Reef Initiative and garnering support for the multi-million dollar Chesapeake Bay Watershed Restoration Fund.
Astle has also helped the Maryland Caucus beat back repeated attacks on trapping and a recently approved black bear hunting season in the backyard of the anti-hunting Humane Society of the United States/Fund for Animals headquarters.
His dedication to bring sportsmen's issues to the top of the legislative agenda through the Caucus has time and time again lead to incomparable advances for the hunting and fishing constituents of Maryland.
