Oregon State Police released a dashcam video showing a gun battle that unfolded Aug. 29 off an Interstate about 100 miles east of Portland and ended in the death of the suspect.
The video was released after a public records request by The Oregonian. It shows Trooper Matt Zistel, 26, pull over a cadillac driven by motorist John Van Allen, 34. Once on the shoulder, Allen steps out of the vehicle and assumes a military stance, all while Zistel yells for him to return to his vehicle. Allen then pulls a gun from his waistband and open fires on the trooper.
What can be difficult to see, Zistel returns fire, striking Allen in the chest. As the smoke clears, Allen runs to his car and drives off. The authorities found him a half-mile away from the scene, pulled onto the shoulder, slumped over and dead behind the wheel.
Zistel was also wounded, suffering from a gunshot wound to his side. He was treated at a nearby hospital and released.
