This argument comes up more and more as it becomes more widely-known that despite the skyrocketing levels of gun ownership in this country, crime is down, killing sprees are down, and people are safer than ever.
It also stems from the well-recognized and precisely deliberated right to bear arms, and that the courts have upheld that the Second Amendment doesn’t give people any rights, it explicitly prevents the government from infringing on that right.
What we see now is that there are some people who don’t like guns and aren’t afraid to, in the face of knowledge otherwise, get rid of them despite the likely negative consequences. And in order to to that, they will have to repeal the Second Amendment directly.
