Brownells Gets High Marks From Babes with Bullets
The first Midwest Ladies Action Shooting camp, known nationally as Babes with Bulletsâ„ ¢, was held outside Montezuma, Iowa from September 18th to 21st. Brownells' Big Springs Range was the location for the three days of shooting.
Frank and Pete Brownell helped the Midwest camp become a reality by offering the use of their Big Springs Range facility. Both camp founder Kay Clark-Miculek and organizer Deb Ferns were impressed with the Brownells range and accommodations. As Kay noted, “The Brownells have built a first-class facility here. The range is well laid out, with tall berms for safety, plenty of target frames, a good selection of steel targets and lots of room to set up stages for our final day where campers participate in a small match.”
Brownells' Linden House Lodge provided the housing accommodations for the 38 women involved in the program. Ferns was enthusiastic about the Linden House, “We've utilized a variety of houses for our camps but none as beautiful and as accommodating as the lodging provided by Brownells! To have it located within a few miles of the gun range, along with having accomplished chefs and a commercial kitchen to provide our meals, made this location one of my favorite places. We're excited to be returning again in 2009!”
Head instructor Kay Clark-Miculek originally started the ladies camps at her home range outside Shreveport, LA, in 2004. Camp organizer is Deb Ferns, who attended the 2004 camp and went on to write the book, Babes with Bullets. Now, five years later, the camps, taught by women handgun champions like Kay, travel to different parts of the US several times a year. The camp mission that Miculek and Ferns share is to introduce and educate women with little or no experience in firearms to the wide variety of practical shooting sports. That mission is also shared by Brownells, as Company CEO, Frank Brownell said, “We've been encouraging our customers to do everything they can to take women shooting for years, so we jumped at the chance to host this event. To keep our firearms tradition alive we have to make sure women love our sport as much as we do.”
Miculek shared her technique for connecting with women, “We start beginners with .22 caliber pistols so they learn the basics on a gun with very little recoil. Once we're confident they have mastered the basics we move them up to 9mm centerfire.” Miculek was complimentary of camp sponsor Smith & Wesson, who since 2004 has subsidized the cost of each program and also provides guns for loan to those campers who do not have their own gun. She also noted that additional support comes from the United States Practical Shooting Association along with BladeTech and Safariland, who supply holsters and belts for campers to use at these events.
Channel 13, the Des Moines NBC TV affiliate, did a very favorable story on the event and their reporter, Elizabeth Klinge, even got a bit of instruction. You can see the story here:Babes And Bullets
