Titusville, FL – “One indication of this is a recent report that Detroit Police Chief James Craig thinks arming more citizens is a way to fight crime,” Snyder said.
According to the Detroit News, Chief Craig said last week at a press conference that, “When we look at the good community members who have concealed weapons permits, the likelihood they’ll shoot is based on a lack of confidence in this police department.”
Chief Craig stated that, “Good Americans with concealed pistol licenses translates into crime reduction,” reported Sandy Fitzgerald of Newsmax.
Snyder indicated the statements by Chief Craig followed by a few months a suggestion by Ron Noble of Interpol that an armed citizenry is a bulwark against terrorism.
Ronald K. Noble, Secretary General of the international crime-fighting police group, spoke about the terrorist attack in Nairobi, Kenya last September.
“Ask yourself,” said Noble, “If that was Denver CO, if that was Texas, would those guys have been able to spend hours, days, shooting people randomly,” he said, referring to areas with pro-gun traditions.
“It makes police around the world question their views on gun control,” Noble continued. “It makes citizens question their views on gun control. You have to ask yourself, ‘Is an armed citizenry more necessary now than it was in the past with an evolving threat of terrorism?”
Snyder said the Craig and Noble statements comport with findings of the National Association of Chiefs of Police in NACOP’s annual opinion surveys of United States command officers. According to the latest report on opinion of chiefs of police and sheriffs, 87% think any vetted citizen should be able to purchase a firearm for sport or self-defense, 63% believe national recognition of state-issued concealed weapons permits would facilitate the crime fighting efforts of the professional law enforcement community, and 73% feel qualified, law-abiding armed citizens can help law enforcement reduce violent criminal activity.
