Arizona –-(Ammoland.com)- Due to the length and severity of this year’s drought and the lack of precipitation in the spring, Arizona has reached the critical stage for water hauling in many elk units.
The Arizona Elk Society started our water hauling efforts in Unit on June 28 2012.
The first day we were able to haul over 5000 gallons and at this time all the critical areas around Tusayan have some water.
In the first week we hauled over 21,500 gallons. We will continue to haul and we are currently expanding the program to other areas of Unit 9 and then to 7E and 7W as needed.
Last month in Unit 5A the Arizona Elk Society along with Arizona Game and Fish, and Coconino National Forest completed a project to clean and deepen dirt tanks in the area. Funds were supplied by the AZGFD Habitat Partnership Committee, Arizona Elk Society and a grant from the National Forest Foundation.
The AES working in conjunction with AZGFD, Tusayan Ranger District of the Kiabab National Forest and rancher Joe Auza have identified 11 dirt tanks in Unit 9 that are in need of cleaning and deepening. Many of these tanks are silted in and have minimal water holding capacity. The Board of the Arizona Elk Society has agreed to fund the work to be done with money raised at our banquets. Joe Auza, AZGFD and the USFS have agreed to help with matching funds. We hope to start work on the tanks as soon as the Forest fire restrictions are lifted.
